The College of Liberal Arts was established in 1969. The College currently includes the Department of Chinese Literature, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, the Department of History, the Graduate Institute of Taiwan Literature and Transnational Cultural Studies, the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Science, the Bachelor Programs in Taiwan Humanities and Creativity, the Program of Digital Humanities and Creative Industries, and the International PhD Program in Taiwan and Transcultural Studies. With the professional competencies in literature, history, linguistics, language teaching, creative culture and library science, the College aims to cultivate students’ literacy in humanities, languages as well as information science. Students are expected to learn through both Chinese and Western culture traditions and new trends; we nurture their strengths in caring for the community and connecting to the international societies.

The mission of the College is to foster students’ basic humanistic values, linguistic and written language expressions, and to further develop students’ mindset in contemplating fundamental human values and ultimate social concern. To cater to the modern needs, the College has designed a series of digital humanities curricula, which are required courses collegewide. Focusing on both theoretical knowledge and practical applications, the cross-department courses include Digital Humanities and Information Application Program, Mandarin Teaching Program, and the newly established Bachelor Programs in Taiwan Humanities and Creativity, starting from the academic year 2020. We actively encourage interdisciplinary learning and integrate the abilities in humanities professional knowledge and digital information application, with a view to enhancing students’ future competitiveness in higher education and job market.
