Chinese Teaching Program
Program Overview:
Due to growing global trends and interest in cultural exchanges, Chinese has become one of the most powerful languages in the world, second only to English; and numerous nations worldwide have already incorporated the Chinese language as a crucial part of their own language education. In the interests of meeting the high demand for Chinese language teachers, as well as helping the students of the University cultivate an additional expertise and increase their chances of employment, the Departments of Chinese Literature, Foreign Languages and Literatures, and the Language Center have come together to establish the Program of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.
Program Goals:

The program aims to help students do the following:

  1. Exploring the knowledges relevant to Chinese as a Second Language and the Chinese language;
  2. Researching into Chinese language teaching methods and materials;
  3. Cultivating an additional expertise in Teaching of Chinese as a Second Language;
  4. Building an understanding of the development in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language as well as Chinese cultures and society;
  5. Developing an integrated ability for the practice of Chinese language teaching.
Target Students:
Applications are open for students of NCHU Bachelor Programs (including students from the Bachelor’s Degree Further Study Programs) in their second year or above. Students from the Bachelor’s Degree Further Study Programs must abide by “L3-04  NCHU Regulations for Course Registration between Undergraduate Programs and Extension Education Programs” (L3-04 國立中興大學學士班與進修學士班學生互選課程辦法) to enroll in the Program of Teaching Chinese as a Second Language.
Requirements for Application:
When applying for the program, the applicant must present an academic transcript of College Chinese and Freshman English, with a minimum score of 70 for both subjects in each semester of their study.  
Curriculum Design:
The program is focused on cultivating talents in Teaching Chinese as a Second or Foreign Language. The courses of the program are intended to cultivate students’ instructional skills in listening, conversation, reading, writing as well as cultural knowledge. Students will learn to teach non-native speakers of Chinese, including foreign individuals, overseas Chinese, and new immigrants.
The program consists of three compulsory core courses and various elective courses in the modules of Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, and Chinese Cultures and Society.
Students will receive a Certificate of Completion upon completion of 8 courses (earning a minimum of 18 credits) and obtaining a proof of their foreign language skills.
  • Core Courses (Compulsory): The program has 3 core courses, which amount to eight credits.
    • Introduction to Linguistics
    • Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Second Language
    • Teaching Methodology of Chinese as a Second Language
  • Module of Chinese Linguistics (Elective): Students must take at least 2 courses in this module, and accumulate a minimum of four credits. Students are required to take either Old Chinese Philology or Shuo Wen Jie Zi to get their module credits.
    • An Overview of Mandarin Grammar
    • Phonetics
    • Syntax
    • Semantics
    • Phraseology
    • Old Chinese Philology
    • Shuo Wen Jie Zi
  • Module of Chinese Language Teaching (Elective): Students must take at least 2 courses in this module and earn a minimum of four credits. Please note that if a student takes both Second Language Acquisition (I) and Second Language Acquisition (II), only one of the courses will be counted towards the program credits.
    • Mandarin Pronunciation and Oral Communication
    • Digital Language Teaching: Theory and Practice
    • Teaching Practicum of Chinese as a Second Language
    • Second Language Acquisition (I) (II)
    • Language Testing and Assessment
  • Module of Chinese Cultures and Society (Elective): Students must take at least 1 course in this module and earn a minimum of two credits.
    • Chinese Cultures and Society
    • Sociolinguistics
    • Language and Culture
    • Introduction to the Culture of Taiwan

 

*All the courses in the program are worth two credits except Introduction to Linguistics, which is a four-credit course.
*Students must take all the core courses and select elective courses from the three modules, as specified above.
*Students have to get at least six credits from the courses which are not part of the curriculum of their major, minor, or dual-degree program.

 

The Foreign Language Requirement of the Program:
Students who wish to apply for the Certificate of Completion must complete all the courses and fulfill the foreign language requirement cited in the “MOE Standards of Foreign Language Proficiency for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language.” (教育部對外華語教學能力認證考試外語能力合格認定基準) If students do not meet the above requirement, they are required to study at least one foreign language of their choice (including English); they have to get at least 8 credits or complete a minimum of 120 hours in university-level foreign language classes to fulfill the requirement.
