A Syllabus

Course Description

This course is designed to enhance students’ general English proficiency on high-intermediate level, with a special focus on reading and listening abilities without ruling out the opportunity to exercise writing and speaking practices. The class is divided into two sections: reading section and listening section. For reading section, we will use reading materials derived from different sources for different purposes. For close reading and class discussion, we will read articles drawn from magazines with complex sentences and intricate organization, and up-dated information with global significance. We will learn to appreciate the variety of vocabulary covering different fields of knowledge, the sophistication of the sentences, and the structures, and discuss the contents and the ideas. Most of the class discussion in the reading section will focus on these articles with the purpose of elevating the level of your English proficiency. But to help students forming the habit of reading English at home and keeping a good sense of English, the class requests the students to read the assigned book The X-Files: Squeeze . Since this book comes with a CD, students can also practice listening to the story at home. Students are encouraged to ask questions regarding this book at the end of each meeting, but I will not schedule discussion in class for this. We will have quizzes based on the story regularly. The outside reading will be tested both in the Midterm Exam and Final Exam. For listening/oral section, we will use Interchange 2 mainly for oral practice and discussion. Listening materials from on-line media will be assigned on regular basis for practice and discussion.

Course Requirements The students are requested to finish the assigned reading before class and actively participate in in-class activities, which might come in the forms of Q and A, quizzes, group discussion, and short reports etc. A review test for vocabulary will be implemented after we finish the discussion, which will be part of the outside reading quiz. There will be no remedial quizzes, should you miss any of them. The class will be taught in English, and students have to learn to respond and conduct discussion in English. Other than the assigned reading, all students are advised to make good use of the on-campus Foreign Language Access Center (FLAC), which is located on the 5th Floor of the Language Center, to do extra practice. The evaluation will take into consideration students’ frequency of self-learning. You have to get at least 3 stickers from FLAC before the midterm, another 3 before the final exam. The more stickers you get, the higher you score on your class performance.
