A Syllabus

Course Description This course is designed to enhance students’ general English proficiency on high-intermediate level, with a special focus on reading and listening abilities without ruling out the opportunity to exercise writing and speaking practices. The class is divided into two sections: reading section and listening section. For reading section, we will use reading materials derived from different sources for different purposes. For close reading and class discussion, we will read articles drawn from magazines with complex sentences and intricate organization, and up-dated information with global significance. We will learn to appreciate the variety of vocabulary covering different fields of knowledge, the sophistication of the sentences, and the structures, and discuss the contents and the ideas. Most of the class discussion in the reading section will focus on these articles with the purpose of elevating the level of your English proficiency. But to help students forming the habit of reading English at home and keeping a good sense of English, the class requests the students to read the assigned book Classic Detective Stories. Since this book comes with a CD, students can also practice listening to the story at home. Students are encouraged to ask questions regarding this book at the end of each meeting, but I will not schedule discussion in class for this. We will have quizzes based on the story regularly. The outside reading will be tested both in the Midterm Exam and Final Exam. For listening section, we will use Interchange 2.
Course Requirements The students are requested to finish the assigned reading before class and actively participate in in-class activities, which might come in the forms of Q and A, quizzes, group discussion, and short reports etc. A review test for vocabulary and Cloze test will be implemented at the beginning of the Thursday meetings. There will be no remedial quizzes, should you miss any of them. The class will be taught in English, and students have to learn to respond and conduct discussion in English. Other than the assigned reading, all students are advised to make good use of the on-campus Foreign Language Access Center (FLAC), which is located on the 5th Floor of the Language Center, to do extra practice. Part of the self-learning materials will be incorporated into tests, but there will be no class discussion for them. The evaluation will take into consideration students’ frequency of self-learning. You have to get at least 3 stickers from FLAC before the midterm, another 3 before the final exam. The more stickers you get, the higher you score on your class performance.

Class Policy Absence without leave will cost you 1 % final grade. Lateness (arrive after the roll call) will cost you 0.5 % final grade. More than 5 absences will cost you the entire course. It is important you establish sense of responsibility for the class. University life, after all, is still very much about go to class and learn. Reduce your time on MSN, go to sleep earlier and get up at regular early hours is a MUST for a successful college life.

Class performance (10%), Quizzes (10%), Attendance and Self-learning (10%)
Midterm Exam (as a result of the average between reading test and listening test) 35%;
Final Exam (average between listening and reading tests) 35%.

English Graduation Threshold You need to plan your schedule for passing the requirement for English Graduation Threshold as early as possible. You can either take a GEPT High-intermediate Test in April, or October 2010. Depending on the date you set to take the test, you should start to work out a preparation schedule. Should you need help in preparing for the required GEPT high-intermediate test, please check with FLAC or the adjacent 英檢室。Our course will not incorporate skills for passing GEPT.

Course Schedule The content and the scope of the assigned readings may subject to revision if necessary.
